can my employer fire me?

can an empolyer force you to take a promotion. my boss wants me to take the manager position at his store but i dont want that kind of responsibility for a only a 2 dollar pay raise. i currently make 12 an hour and want to pay me 14 for the manager position. i told him that i would only do it for a salary of 38,000 a year. he told that he can only pay me 14 an hour and if i did not take the position that there was no place for me here anymore. Of course. Assuming, that is, that you don't have a contract and you're not in a union or covered by civil service or a similar kind of protection. Otherwise, you're an employee at will, which means the employer can fire you at any time for any reason or no reason at all, including your refusal to take a promotion. Or, if he's feeling mean, you can agree to take the promotion and he can still fire you.
