Late legal action against a former employee

Hello
We are a small company in Florida.
Over 3 years ago, we terminated an individual for not following company policy after we discovered he had a competing business on the side and were prospecting some of our customers. We have never filed any complaints against him or started any legal action.

It was recently brought out that we should since our business suffered from his actions today. When he left a lot of his customers (our customers) followed him.

Is there a time frame for a company to start legal action against a former employee? This person was terminated over 3 years ago.

Thank you
