Dear Mel: Is it legal for an employer or company to dock an employee a half a day for being 1 minute late?

My wife and I showed up to my work place 10 minutes early, but couldn't get through the gate because someone in front of us lost his identification card and had to get buzzed in by security which took up all the time. I ended up clocking in 1 minute late because of that.
After bringing the incident to my supervisor, he docked me a half a day for being 1 minute late although it wasn't my fault. Is this legal for him or the company to do?

Generally, an employer must pay you for the hours that you work. Depending on your rate of pay, it may also be a violation of federal wage and hour law if this causes your wages to fall below minimum wage.
