Demoted at work

I was demoted today for failing to display "a leadership quality" that I was not trained for at any point in time. I only found out after I got in trouble that this was an issue. I have not been written up for this issue and my overall performance and attendance have been impeccable. When I asked the reason this was decided I was told "you can possibly become an HR issue in the future". I was not given any documentation and when I requested an audience with the decision makers I was denied immediately. Do I have any recourse here? Thanks

The short answer is "it depends." If you are covered by a collective bargaining agreement or are a governmental employee, you might. If you are an at-will employee, the employer does not need any reason to demote you or even fire you.
