Was it right for them to cut bonus w/o warning?

My husband is an salaried employee for a auto parts chain store. When hired he was guaranteed a base salary, bonus & stock shares. Today he was told all of a sudden that his bonus is going to be cut because he had to leave early a couple of days (to pick our son up from school, 1 car family). That equals to almost $3500 a yr in reduction to salary. Is this right? He was not warned or written up at all before this. And there is no record that this is the standard practice throughout the company.
