Opening and stealing employees mail??!!

I was just informed that a fellow employee was going through the company mail and found a letter that was addressed to me and he opened it. Showed it around to fellow employees and then kept the letter! I just found out about this. This happened 2 weeks ago! We are a Christian based company and we had an employee that was out on work release. He was 20 yrs old and was addicted to heroin. I became a pen pal to him when he went back to jail in hopes of keeping his spirits up and just hoping to be a mentor which is what our company is about. Well I found out that someone saw a letter to me from the inmate and opened it, read it, showed it to fellow co-workers and then KEPT it!! Can this be legal at all?

Before I respond to your inquiry, I must state that we have not spoken, I have not reviewed the relevant documents and facts, and I do not represent you. Therefore, my discussion below is not a legal opinion, but is informational only. Finally, my discussion applies only to issues to which Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Federal law applies, unless otherwise specified.

That being said, what you describe is a violation of the law. You should speak to the offending employee - don't ask if he did what you heard, just say "I understand you have a letter addressed to me from [name]; please give it to me." If he won't, speak to your employer directly (if he does, you may still want to do so).
