Must an employeer pay you on time?

My employer has neglected to pay the employees on time twice in the past month and a half, and it is wreaking havoc with my credit score and my bank account. We are supposed to be paid every other Wednesday. We were not paid on 30 September, causing me to overdraft my account buying gas to go to work that morning and caused me to be unable to pay my bills on time. This happened again on 11 Sept. They blamed it on the bank holiday, stating that direct deposit cannot go through on a bank holiday, yet all the employees with paper checks were paid on time. I was told that they would cover my overdraft charges, but I am yet to see that money and need it desperately, as I'm now behind on bills and still in the hole from paying overdraft charges.
