Do I have a case?

My husband interviewed for a management position and got the job. He left his former job and worked at his new position one week. He then got covid. He was out 2 weeks. His assistant did his job while he was out. When he came back, his boss told him that it will be cheaper to keep the assistant instead of him and so my husband was fired. Is this legal? If they were interested in promoting the assistant they shouold have done so before they hired my husband and he left a job to go there.
