Can they take money out of my paycheck?

My place of employment is telling me they are going to take $250 out of my paycheck. A few months ago there was a malfunction at work and one of the computers was not printing drawer change slips. The managers that day just took all of the 20s out of the drawer and pooled them together to get one lump sum. The district manager put together the afternoon deposit to "help out" and before she left she told me me had just pulled some more 20s out of the back cash drawer and put them in the safe. When I counted the money later that night it was $250 less than she said it would be. When I found out they thought I had stolen the money I told them to watch the security tapes. Of course they didn't see anything on them. But they said the money was missing on my shift and I am required to pay it. Is this legal and what should I do? They recently just fired my husband for being violent because he hit a meat freezer and I can't afford to get fired too.
