Can an employer tell an associate to hide their cross on their neck?

My boyfriend just started a new job a few months ago and has never had a problem with fellow associates or managers until recently when one of his managers told him to tuck his cross away. My boyfriend told him no, that it is an expression of his faith, and proceeded about his day at work. A few days later he receives and email from the district manager instructing the "team" to keep their jewelry away. I have read this companys handbook and nowhere does it say anything about jewelry - just that there shall be no discrimination against religion. So basically my question is, is my boyfriend wrong in publicly displaying his cross at work, or is the company wrong in making him hide it. And is there anything we can to do fight it, if we are right. Any comments suggestions or tips would be appreciated.
