Can a sheriff call you about a civil complaint at your place of employment?

I decided to pursue a different career path and resigned from my previous employer over 2 months ago. My ex-boss decides to text me a couple of weeks ago about a charge that I supposedly owe. We conversated through via text about the situation. Today, 7-27-16, I received a phone call at my new place of employment from a sheriff stating my previous employer had a complaint about the referenced charge. I am being wrongfully accused. How do I proceed in this situation? I'm very taken back by this because I have not received any type of letter.
