retaliation termination

i was employed as a bartender at a private veterans club. our commander fired me, his son who lied about me saying things about my private life called him one night and then the commander said that he would make an example out of me and fired me,i asked him am i fired he said yes you are the example i said you better get someone here to finish out my shift, he said no you will fucking finish it. i then spoke to someone who could work it and i left. this is not the first time i have been spoken to like this, he called me into the kitchen and would start talking to me about the lies that his son told him. i was called that evening by the commander because his son said that one of my friends called him, he then called me filthy names and threatened me, he then had his fatger call me and acuse me of having to many boyfriends and that i couldn't do that.and that he was sick of the bullshit. my question is can i be fired from my job because of lies about my personal life? i told the commander that his son was lieing and to have him stop calling me and driving by my house. then he fired me.

Fired on a Lie

Because New York is an employment at will state, an employee can be fired on the basis of lies.

Also because New York is an employment at will state, you can quit a job without notice, and your employer cannot require you to finish up a shift. You don't even have an obligation to find anyone to finish the shift.
