non-compete dispute

I recently left a company which made me sign a non-compete contract. Before being offered and excepting a job with my current company, I showed them this and they didn't think it was valid. Now my old company is threatening to take action and my employers are saying they don't want to go to court, so I would either have to leave the U.S (I am a british citizen) to continue working with them. What options are available to me.

pay the lawyer!

your insistence that you won't pay a consultation fee is not appropriate. you have signed an agreement that may or may not be enforceable, depending on the circumstances of your departure from the previous company, and also depending on the nature of the new company and the new work you do there. an attorney experienced in employment law and litigation can examine the agreement, advise you as to its enforceability, and write a letter to your former employer if their threats are frivolous. but you should be willing to pay that attorney for her/his professional services and time.
