fired for not signing non compete

I worked for a company for over two years as regional sales manager. It is a small franchised company and i worked directly for the owner of the NC, VA, WV, MD territory. I was given the impression at hiring that I would have the opportunity to buy one of the territories in the future. Recently I approached the owner and inquired about the time frame and possibilities of buying into a territory, etc.. The answer was that he had changed his mind and that the territories would not be for sale. Soon after, a non-compete agreement was presented to me, and when i said i was not comfortable signing it, I was immediately fired. His position was that I should have signed it when I was hired, but he forgot until now. Do I have a wrongful termination suit?

covenant not to compete

It depends. In North Carolina, the at-will employment doctrine can give employers a lot of flexibility. However, I don't want to say that you have no rights because there might be something that you have not said that gives you some rights. I would suggest that you seek legal counsel who can listen to all the facts and evaluate the whole story.
