What is redundancy pay and making someone redundant? What are the qualifications?

My friends employer told him to come in Monday to receive pay and the company would be closing down, due to corona virus. His employer has not "titled" the pay as severance or otherwise. They also have to reapply for employment should the company open back up. He has been employed there full time for 6 years in Nevada. He will be filing for unemployment after he fullfills the one week of no work, as required. I'm curious as to what redundancy pay is? What does it mean to make someone redundant and what are the qualifications? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
