Serverance and discrimination

Our company is going through a RIF and I am eligible for a severence as per the announced policy - 2 weeks of pay for every year worked, with a cap of 8 weeks. The RIF is going to happen on 31st March 2005. I found out today that some employees (many of them my peers) were given a letter about a year ago indicating that if they were RIF'ed within 1 year they will receive a serverance benefit of 6 months pay. I never got the letter. Is this grounds for discrimination?

Discrimination yes, but illegal? Who knows?

Not all kinds of discrimination are illegal. A lawyer would have to know much more about the situation than you've described.

To learn more about illegal forms of discrimination, check out this great web site www.workplacefairness.org. It is for non-lawyers and gives you a whole lot of information about employee rights.
