Is my noncompete void?

I am an independent contractor with a publishing company based in California and edit content for them. I have a job offer from a company in Texas to be a team leader for SAT/ACT content which is something that my previous company did. My contract with the California company has a clause in it that says "for one year thereafter...Consultant will not engage in any activity that is in any way
competitive with the business or demonstrably anticipated business of Company, and Consultant will not assist any other person or organization in competing or in preparing to compete with any business or demonstrably anticipated business of Company."

Can I not take on the new job because of this clause? Are there any geographic limitations on this noncompete? Is the fact that I'm an independent contractor help in voiding this?
