Time off

I worked for a company for about 3 years, at the moment I requested vacation knowing that I have no PTO left, my supervisor approved it and now the supervisor is questioning why I’m taking vacation without having PTO, they know I’m not requesting to get paid for it and I’m aware that it would be unpaid. My question is even though I have no PTO can I still request time off? Been with the company 2 1/2 years and never was I questioned for my time off.
