I work in Virginia at a non-profit and I was suspended without pay for a week with no prior warnings and no specific instances of misconduct were provided to me, is that allowed?

I have worked for this org for 2 years and 3 months. I had an exception record and have been promoted twice in that time. Recently,we have been going through a great deal of change with new leadership taking the helm. The past 3 months have been very difficult and I will fully admit to having been very frustrated. I tried reaching out to my direct supervisor (a new VP), the COO (also new), and the VP of HR during those 3 months asking for help to get through this. I actually apologized to all 3 of them at separate times for being frustrated and just wishing for better communication. Then on a Tuesday afternoon, I was called into a meeting with all three and told I was "spreading lies, rumors, and being wholly unsupportive which is not the behaviors they expect from a Director." Albeit, they also said they find value in my work. The asked me if I wanted to respond and I said, "that statement is very vague and I want to be able to respond not react and I needed to take time to process." I was under the impression that perhaps I was getting a write up, but then they said I was getting suspended without pay for a week starting immediately. I was so shocked, I was already crying at this point, but then I was just at a loss. My org has never suspended anyone and I had no indication that things were this bad. I was told that I have the right to tell whomever I wish about this but that what and whom I told would be taken into consideration for my future employment with the org. I felt so threatened and unfortunately, because there were no specifics I do not even feel like I am getting the chance to improve on anything bc I don't actually know what I did. I know I could have handled my frustrations better, but I did not lie or spread rumors.
