That being said, severance can be used to reduce your unemployment - if what you were paid was a settlement for a valid claim, then you might have a different result. You should have the severance agreement reviewed by a local employment attorney before you sign.

It sounds like your employer terminated your employment. That is what you should tell the UC office. Just because you accepted severance doesn't mean you quit. You were terminated by your employer.

You should read the terms of the severance, but most likely it did not try to forbid you from applying for UC, just from filing a lawsuit against the company. Nor should it. The employer does not pay UC, the state does.
