Can my employer make me sign the employee handbook without giving time to review it?

I am working in a dental practice that has been open one year.
We were recently given an employee handbook, which had a lot of grammatical errors and very vague descriptions of what is expected, mostly for the employer not for the workers.
I was asked to read it over but was not told when I would need to reading and sign it, but I was not told by a specific date.
I forgot the handbook at work that evening, I asked if I could return to get it that evening and was told I did not need to make a extra trip as long as the received the sign copy by the end of the week. It was given to me on Monday. When Returning the next day I was approached by the consultant and was told I could read the handbook quickly and then sign it. I told her I would not be signing it today, as I was going to take it home for review! She then asked me if I was my own person? I told her I didn't feel comfortable signing something I had not read besides the Doctor said i could turn it in at the end of the week. I was told she has the final say and you will sign it today! The doctor sided with the consultant.
In this book it says nothing about salary paid employees and they are going to make me clock in and out. It also states that if the Doctor is not there I could be asked to stay home with out pay, but I am salary payed employee?
Is this legal?
