Can my employer demand payment back for tuition paid up front if no contract was signed?

My employer agreed to pay my tuition up front every semester. In return, I would be obligated to remain with the company 2 years after graduation.
There was no contract signed...strictly a verbal agreement. If I quit before graduation (or before my 2 year agreement), am I legally obligated to pay this back to my employer?
