Can a person be justly fired after being defamated by their supervisor?

I worked for a healthcare facility for three years, and was loved for my work by the residents in my care as well as my peers. Unfortunately, my supervisor didn't like me and continued to spread false information that I was a patient abuser and a liability. This has since led to my termination. I have now been unemployed for four months, cannot get another job in a nursing facility and am not being permitted by my former employer to see my personnel file, nor will they tell me what is being said about me to potential employers. I cannot collect unemployment as well. This has placed an overwhelming emotional strain on me and I am extremely depressed. What are my options at ths point?
