required to work 52 hrs or be fired

A female friend of mine recently refused to work over 52 hrs a week, several other people in the finanical department are on medical leave because of heart attacks and long working hours and she feels this was unfair because she has worked there for several years at the normal 40hr week, and never was required to work overtime. They fired her stating she was insubordinate and also refused to provide her with unemployment support.
Is this legal?

An employer can require overtime, but must pay time and a half if the position is a non-exempt one. There are exceptions which include situations where a person's health is threatened. This can sometimes be addressed through the Family and Medical Leave Act or the Americans With Disabilities Act.
