is it legal or do I have to answer employee questions about what I did after I left work ny

If what you did can reflect badly on your employer it may not matter. If you are "at will" which most employees are you will simply be looking for a new job. There are no laws that say you can't. Unless, of course, you did something legal such as go to a gay bar which would make taking action against you discriminatory because such action would appear to be motivated because of sex which would violate federal, state and some local hiring and firing discriminatory prohibitions.
