if a person is hired initially as a part time, but then is scheduled and works a full time schedule for over a month consecutively, is their status considered full time and hours protected?

I was hired in a non-union retail store as part time, but after my first week have been scheduled and working a full time schedule. I learned my hours may get cut back to part time. Is that correct/legal?
I thought that if a person works a full time schedule for many consecutive weeks that they are considered full time and can not be reverted back to part time status, or is that something that is only contained in union contracts?
