can the police department not hire me because Im getting sent to fight for my country?

I WAS WORKING PART TIME IN ONE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND I WAS TRYING TO COLLECT UMEPLOYMENT BENIFITS TO MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE IN HOURS AND PAY BUT THEY REFUSED MY REQUEST. I REINLISTED INTO THE NAVY BECAUSE I CAN NOT AFFORD TO PAY MY BILLS AND CHILD SUPPORT FOR MY CHILDREN WORKING PART TIME. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT I GOT HIRED AT ANOTHER POLICE DEPARTMENT. I FILL OUT ALL THE PAPERS (W2 FORM, PENSION AND SO ONE) ON THE FIRST DAY THAT I THAT I WAS TO START WORKING THEY INFORMED ME THAT BECAUSE I WAS BEING DEPLOYED THAT THE FREEHOLDER DENIED MY APPLICATION AND NOW I NOT ONLY RESIGNED FROM THE FIRST POLICE DEPARTMENT I HAVE NO JOB. THIS POLICE DEPARTMENT WILL NOT EVEN INFORM ME IF I WILL HAVE EMPLOYMENT WHEN I RETURN. IS THIS LEGAL FOR THEM TO DO THIS TO ME BECAUSE IM GOING TO FIGHT FOR MY COUNTRY?
