can employer dock my tips for a mistake even though they received the money for the sale?

I sent a cash sale through the POS system (which is used for credit sales only). The customer did pay. Now the employer says I have to pay for that sale out of my tips because it wasn’t suppose to go through the POS. Is this legal? They have essentially gotten double the sale since the customer paid and I had to.
