can a pharmacist be terminated if a prescription label falls into the trash, unknown to the pharmaci

My father in law was recently fired by Wal-Mart. He has been a California-licensed pharmacist for 36 years. Apparently, when "pharmacy management" was in his pharmacy, they found a prescription bottle in the trash with the label on. He had no idea that someone threw him away. Also we suspect he was fired because he "made too much" and are trying to use that, or because they no longer wanted to accommodate him (ADA) as he is a double amputee with two artificial legs. Is there a way to prove wrongdoing by Wal-Mart? Was the stated reason legal?
