What do I do when my employer is asking me to find another job, but I do not want too?

I was hired in August for a PI paralegal position. In September, the firm I work for found out the PI attorney was leaving and going to another firm. This left them without a PI attorney and me without an actual job or title. I have since been informed they do not plan on hiring another PI attorney. I have also been encouraged to find another job since I do not have much work to do currently. I am the main earner for my household of four and not in a position to find another job, however the lack of meaningful work and the general workplace environment is such that I wish I could be fired or laid off at this point. What should I do?
