What can I do to stop malice rumours

My nephew works where I work. I have heard rumours about him. First it was comments about his sexual orientation they do not refer to him by his name, but call him "the lazy gay guy". I went to our administer and told him about what I heard his response was "well that's not nice ", but it doesn't stop there he's been called into office for numerous things such as sleeping on the job, supposedly hitting a resident ,all complaints against him were investigated and found none of them true. Then comes another rumour this one started with a aide telling two other aids durning report that because a confused female resident fought when having brief changed by her and my nephew it meant that my nephew must of sexual abused the female resident. Three things this particular female resident is known to fight when changing her long before my nephew ever started working there, second my nephew is a gay male, third if this was a real concern would she of reported it to our boss instead of spreading rumours the aid claimed she was told by the nurse to pass it on to the other aids in report. When asked my boss said she knew nothing about it and as much as she didn't like it she couldn't do anything about rumours. This is the awful stuff he goes through every time he works, he wants to go on to school to be a nurse, but rumours like this are very damaging what can he do?
