What are the statute of limitations in IL

In Aug, 2015, I was a mgr for a concrete co. An employee was upset due to a timecard issue and started to swing at me. I did not hit him, however, I did stop him by holding him against the wall and telling him it was not going to happen. Because I was mgt, I was fired. The employer said "Per the handbook, mgt is never to touch employees. I should have let him hit me". However, this is not accurate. This information is not in the handbook I was provided. Am I still within the time limits to sue? I ask now as this same thing just happened to a friend of mine at the same company and was advised the same thing.
