Vacation pay taken out of final pay check

After 3 months of employment, I became very ill, had emergency surgery and was back to work after missing 3 weeks. When I was given my paycheck (distributed while I was absent) I was told the employers decided to pay me regardless of my being gone so "I wouldn't have to worry about money." One week would be a gift and one would be a weeks paid vacation which I recieve after one year of employment. I was surprised and very grateful.
I just left that job due to travel difficulties and was told they are removing the vacation pay from my last check that they paid me. I did not ask to be paid any vacation time--they chose to do it. Now they are taking it back...Is that legal?
