Unfulfilled verbal promise

When I was hired, my hiring manager told me, "This is what's going to happen in 6 months. You will get a senior title. You will also get a quarterly bonus." 6 months came and I asked him what happened to those promises. He said I was doing a very good job, but because the company was going through M&A, all the prmotions and bonuses were on hold. When M&A got settled, I got laid off the following day - with no senior title or bonuses. Do I have a case?

maybe

if you moved to or from or within california to accept this job, based on the promises made, you have a statutory claim for enhanced damages. however, you would have a very hard time proving "verbal" promises. you should talk to an attorney experienced in employment law.
