Termination in a short while after receiving a letter of appointment?

I have been working for an employer under an H1B visa. As a part of the employment based green card processing, a perm process was conducted. I was selected from among several candidates, and was offered a new letter of appointment. Within a couple of months an evaluation was conducted and a recommendation was made in the negative, which is pending approval. Can my employer terminate me at the end of the period stipulated in the new letter of appointment?
