Reimbursement of paid benefits?

I have been employed for a company for close to two years. After Christmas break I did not return to work because of medical issues. They kept me on the hook until today, 3/18/19. I sent a letter of resignation on 3/15/19 stating that it is going to be some time before returning to work so I will need to step away. Today they sent me an email back saying that they have been paying benefits since January 1st expecting me to return, since im not returning, they want me to pay $1700 back to them as a reimbursement. I was employed that whole time, and they offer free benefits to employees. Is this legal/legit?
