On call/pagerduty with no pay

I'm in CA and am on salary. I'm in IT (computer) operations, not a supervisor, and my salary is above any thresholds defined in law that I can find (> $80k). We have an on call rotation, 24/7 for 1 week every few weeks. There is no compensation for this of any kind. So if I get called at 10 in the morning on Sunday, and take 6 hours to fix an issue, that's a freebie for the company. If I get called every 30 minutes from 7pm to 3am, and spend 20 minutes on each call, that's a freebie for the company. Response time is generally expected to be 3-5 minutes. Is this legal?

I understand that the time spent waiting for a call is not subject to compensation.

In addition, what about a task scheduled (ahead of time) for 9pm Sunday night that takes until 5am?

My assumption is that in the US, if you are salaried, the company has no constraints on what they can demand, and the employee's only recourse is to quit. I'd like to be wrong on this, but my amateur reading of the law doesn't give much hope.
