My boss has violent, aggressive outbursts. Can he fire me for this?

The most recent incident was when I was telling him he could not treat Medicaid patients differently. He verbally exploded and became aggressive and waved his fists at me then punched a chair. I became frightened and got up and left. This has caused me severe stress and anxiety over the last year or more. I have reported some incidents to his consultant but there has been no positive change, just increased aggression. I plan on giving him (also the business owner) a letter stating I will no longer tolerate this behavior. Can he fire me for this?
