Maternity Leave and FMLA

I work for a large, reputable telecommunication company as a software engineer (I’m also management employee). I received a severance package the day after my maternity leave ends and while on FMLA. I would like to know if I have any leverage in terms of asking for a greater compensation?

FMLA Rights

You may be able to bargain, depending on the facts. Check out whether the company can avoid liability under the FMLA. You can do that by going to www.workplacefairness.org. It's a website that provides information on the laws that provide employees with some rights.
Also, do a comparison between who got to keep their jobs and who was selected for layoff. Does it appear that there were sex-based stereotypes behind the decision -- or do you agree that the persons selected to be retained were better qualified?
