Mandatory conference calls

I work 40 hours a week as a salon leader in a corporate company for five years. We are required to have weekly conference calls before our shift lasting about an hour. Sometimes, we’re required to be on two a week and are NOT paid. This seems illegal to me to not be paid for mandatory work. I am threatened with being written up if I miss them. Sometimes I don’t have to be at work until 1 and the call is at 8:15 am. (Just let me sleep!) How do I go about inquiring about being paid for these hours moving forward? I have spoken to my boss and she said we can go into the salon for the call and clock in but we’re paid commission! Being clocked in and not servicing clients hurts my commission. Help!
