Is there anything you can do after a company offers you a position and then calls back to reneg?

A friend of mine was offered a position at Nestle Waters/Poland Spring Corp as a driver on Monday morning over the phone. The HR recruiter called him back a few hours later to say he can't have the job, management screwed up, one guy told her he was hired so she did her job and called him and made the offer which he accepted. She explained 2 other managers said they wanted to hire another person and she would have to call my friend and explain. Needless to say he was devestated after being laid off in this economy. This position was very lucrative for him. Does he have any legal leg to stand on? Thank you.

Unless you have a binding employment contract, which 99% of the time has to be a written contract for a set period of time, the employer can terminate you at any time for any reason as long as it is not for an illegal reason. In this instance, if the only evidence is that two supervisors wanted someone else, that is not proof of an illegal reason.

So, without more evidence about the reason for the retraction of the offer, there's not much that can be done.
