Is their a minimun number of hours in a shift?

I am curious if their is a minimum number of hours an employee must work before they are sent home to save labor costs? Sometimes I send people home as early as 45 mins. Thinking, if I were them,I would be upset that I wasted my gas to come to work and was then sent home or what kind of job is this? Working 45 mins?

I hope Im not breaking any laws
