what is the maximum amount of hours an employee is to work?

Is there a limit on how many hours an employee can work? Was scheduled a 12 hour shift - but picked up 4 additional hours voluntarily to help cover shifts - is this permitted?

There are certain industries and occupations which have work hour limits in a 24 hour day and a 7 day week. The limits generally apply to the occupations where working long hours will affect the safety of the worker and the safety of others. Such as long distance truck drivers have hour limits. Airline pilots have hour limits. In addition, many jobs will require a minimum number of hours off at the end of shift before starting a new shift. This is common in most of the operating cratfs in the railroads and a few others.

So, in order to give you a right or correct answer a lot more information is needed. My guess in Carrolton it is highly unlikely that a law is broken by you 16 hour shift, but there are break requirements under state law after 5 hours of work.
