Is an employer required to pay employees if they are not allowed to finish time after r

I work for a company that requires 30 days notice (to be paid for unused time, for one thing). There is a lot of turnover, and in recent months, employees who have resigned have not been allowed to finish out their 30 days. I'm not sure of the specific details, whether they are being terminated after resigning, etc. Is the company required to pay the employee for the full 30 days and for their unused time? Are they eligible for unemployment? Any suggestions on how to avoid this situation?
