I worked as an independent contractor for a company. I recently quit after I received my final paycheck and then my employer puts a stop payment on the check I already cashed. Is this legal? He wants to strip me of all the hours I worked and not compensat

My employer put a stop payment in my paycheck and wants me to return it. This can’t be legal! I worked the hours and the days and I’m ordered to give the money I already cashed right back. What should I do? This is my hard earned money I refuse to give it back.
