I was not informed that my COBRA coverage was being cancelled 7 months into the 18 months?

The advertising company that sold my company to another advertising company is still in the advertising business. The company sold the rights to the name, the manufacturing rights, the IP and engineering data. We found out 2/2/2018 that the coverage was cancelled by the company I worked for on 12/31/2017 when I tried to get a prescription filled. I now will have a lapse in insurance coverage and the possible economic hit until a new policy can be put in place. There is something very wrong with this. Any suggestions?
