I was laid off via letter

I was laid off via a letter stating "Notice of End of Seasonal Assignment" even though I'd been working continuously in the position for more than 2.5 years.
My understanding is that after 6 months I am considered a "permanent employee'.
Of the 4 person crew, 2 employees were kept on staff - both with less than 6 months on the job.
How can an employer change my status from "permanent" to "seasonal" without letting me know formally?
Am I wrong?
It just seems completely unfair.
