I signed my severance agreement and now my company has changed their mind. Can they do that?

My employment contract said my company or myself need to give 30 days notice. My company laid most of its workers off (including myself) and gave me my 30 days notice. I was paid for those 30 days. They also offered me a severance package of one month pay and gave me 45 days to sign. On day 40 I signed and agreed to it. However, they have since come back and said they made a mistake and weren't suppose to offer severance to me after I signed the agreement. Is that legal? Isn't the agreement binding once I signed and sent to them?
