I left a position with a company, they provided me $3000 and $5000 for relocation. There was no contract signed. The firm had now hired an Attorney to come after me for their money. Since there is no contract signed, does the firm have a leg to stand on?

I firm gave me $3000 prior to starting the job and $5000 for relocation after I started for a total of $8000. I left the company due to issues with my daughter. No contract was ever signed. Am I required to pay the money back?
