I have a former employer who is accusing me of breaking tools and failing to replace them. There is no record of any type of corrective action or a sign in/out log and others had access to them. This former employer has mentioned this to many other mutual

I was let go from a custom motorcycle shop where I was the primary builder. The employer stated that " they could no longer afford to keep me on, the builds were losing too much money" The employer then claimed when I returned for my tools that I had broken or damaged parts and demanded that I pay for them and forfeit my last paycheck. When I asked for the parts that they claimed were damaged in exchange for paying for the new ones the employer became enraged. I left and returned another day to finish collecting my property. A conversation with the employer about a customers bike sparked yet another one sided and heated argument in which I was told I was also being held liable for projects that were unfinished and shop tools that were broken. Mind you we rent space and tools to DIY customers. I was an hourly employee, paid by the hour, not the project.
